Library
At SEED, the library is a hub of constant activity throughout the day, a place where students gather to read for pleasure, conduct research or meet for study sessions. Library staff are dedicated to collaborating with teachers and departments to develop strategies for engaging students to read and effectively utilize the library. Middle school students are taught the essentials of library usage – how to locate and check out books, for example – and complete research projects, while upper school students conduct research, undertake genre-based reading assignments, participate in book discussions and complete projects designed to teach the skills necessary for success in both high school and college.
Through exposure to a wide variety of information and information sources, information literacy skills are taught throughout the grade levels. Library resources and research activities are integrated into classroom instruction so that students learn how to locate, evaluate and use information. Utilizing print materials, online databases, periodicals and the Internet, students learn the information literacy skills that are necessary in our technology- and communication-rich society.
Reading is a school-wide priority: teachers create book lists and set aside time for independent reading during class, while student life faculty initiate book clubs and spirited discussions. The library remains open during lunch and after school so SEED’s most avid readers can visit during their free time.
A critical means of encouraging students to read more is to provide them with books and materials that meet their skill levels and cater to their interests. SEED actively creates opportunities for students to read for fun and for class, encouraging these activities through a constantly expanding library collection, which includes fiction, non-fiction, magazines, reference materials and technology resources.
