Academics

At the heart of SEED’s holistic instructional program is a rigorous academic curriculum dedicated to inspiring student achievement and excellence.  Core subjects, including math, English, social studies and science, with additional opportunities in technology, physical education, languages and art, are taught throughout middle and high school.

Each year, The SEED School receives more applications than there are slots available; students are therefore admitted via an annual admissions lottery.  While students may have varied skill levels upon entering SEED, all are united by the desire to excel in middle and high school and graduate from college.  Small class sizes allow teachers to capture students’ imaginations and effectively tailor lesson plans to meet the unique needs of each individual.  Students are encouraged to meet and exceed their potential at every turn.

To ensure students are properly prepared for college, the middle school curriculum focuses on core skills and fundamental building blocks.  Each middle school student must meet a set of rigorous standards before advancing to the upper school program.  Referred to as the Gate, these benchmarks are unique to SEED.  In order to reach the Gate’s goals, many students receive additional support outside of the classroom, including tutoring and extra periods of instruction.  Additionally, students are afforded the opportunity to have a “growth year” in middle school as necessary to master grade level skills so they are fully prepared for rigorous, college preparatory work when they enter high school.

Following completion of the Gate, students in grades nine through twelve undertake a traditional college preparatory curriculum, including Advanced Placement courses.  Students are also encouraged to explore and pursue their interests through a range of electives, such as financial literacy, advanced technology, journalism, youth justice and the history of hip hop.
